The rain in Haidian lies mainly in the paishui (drain)

As we prepared to bike to our language tutoring this evening, the skies darkened and erupted over Haidian. We were confused at first, unable to tell whether the lessening light was a function of weather, the setting sun, or pollution. But eventually the skies opened up and we were forced to adjust our travel plans.

Exiting our apartment, we realized how poorly the construction company designed the drainage systems at our complex. We sloshed through a good two inches of water in some spots, avoided some deeper puddles, and eventually jumped into a taxi that sped us to our destination.

After three hours of language tutoring, with the thunderstorm continuing unabated, we went in search of dinner. We found Ganges, one of Beijing's hidden treasures, an Indian restaurant situated right across the street from the Haidian Science Park. (Home to Google, Deutsche Bank, Microsoft, and others) The chicken vindaloo was spicy, the nan was fresh, and the Bollywood music videos were filled with some high-end choreographed tush-slapping. We followed dinner with a trek down the street to a DVD shop, where I managed to put the evening's language lesson to work by pointing to a movie poster and saying "do you have this?" in Chinese. They did not.

Tonight we are settling in for a good night's rest before beginning our second week of class. Hopefully our shoes will be dry by morning.

We condition our fingers for maximum typing speed with a daily dose of the Drum Game. Then we go outside. Then we blog. Repeat.
