Spoons, Tours, and Tortillas

Here are some photos from our friend Kirby's recent birthday party.

Also, my old boss Roy was in town recently for a conference, so we took him out to the Summer Palace.

Finally, yesterday we had a bit of a food adventure. For breakfast, not too far from a dirt pile outside of our apartment complex, we discovered a new form of street food called "oil stick." (We call them "Chinese churros") They're a bit salty, though, so we brought our own sugar.

For dinner, we had a craving for Mexican food, so we made soft tacos from scratch, right down to the tortillas themselves. Three factors contributed to our craving: first, we missed a night of Mexican food over at Carlos and Luis' place last weekend because of Passover. Second, we ran into this expat near the Wudaokou train station two weeks ago who was selling enchiladas off the back of a cart, street vendor style, to other expats. And third, there's really no decent Central or South American food to be had without traveling for an hour down to the Central Business District. So if you want a good burrito in Haidian, you really need to make it yourself.
