We went with a group of American law students who are in China as part of a three-week program in which they learn Chinese law. It was interesting to listen to the questions that they asked of our host, Judge Ling, in that there wasn't a single inquiry from them that our class didn't know how to answer based upon our studies at BeiDa.
The most interesting aspect of our visit was how Judge Ling began his speech. Before diving into the substance, he noted that some of the victims of the Sichuan earthquake were judges, and that we should pray for them. But the translator relayed his statement in English as follows: "Let us all pray for our colleagues in Sichuan." As soon as she said this, at least half of the folks in the 3-Week Program bowed their heads, whereas everyone in the LL.M. Program simply assumed that it was a gap in translation--after almost a year in China, a largely atheist country, we all assumed that our host would not launch into any benediction of any sort. And he didn't.
I suppose that's what happens after nine months on the Mainland and not a bible-thumping politico in sight.
