"Just what the hell kind of place [am I] getting myself mixed up with?"

Hanging prepositions aside, Evan Osnos has an interesting take on a recent showing of "The Red Detachment of Women" in Beijing.  The play was shown to Nixon when he made his historic trip to East to meet with Zhou Enlai and, ever so briefly, Mao Zedong.  If you're interested in the history of the trip at all, I highly recommend reading Seize the Hour, by Margaret MacMillan.
