I was reminded today of the song below by Tom Lehrer, "Pollution," as I walked through the thick soup of Beijing's air on the way to work. If you haven't seen them yet, take a look at the pictures and independent readings that the BBC has been taking of the Beijing smog, as well as Gary Trudeau's take in today's Doonesbury.

The BBC documentation is funny. 23 years ago I used to do essentially the same thing in Beijing -- look out my window every morning and rate the pollution 6-construction-cranes (lowest) to 0-cranes (highest) and plan accordingly.
