New Year Festival

Jack of all trades, renaissance man...call him what you will, Micah's performance last night at the PKU Law School New Years Festival proves his range of ability extends way outside academic endeavors.

As you can see in the pictures and video, Micah and our friend Penny Chun joined a variety of other talented students to celebrate the Year of the Rat (2008) in style. The New Year Holiday is pretty much the Superbowl of Chinese festivals, and although the actual Chinese New Year does not commence until the middle of February, the celebrations start early. The law school's celebration featured a variety of performances including speeches, dances, the strangest 4-harmonica solo act you have ever seen, and to get to the point--a song by Micah and Penny.

Penny is an incredibly bright guy and one of our teaching assistants from the LL.M. program. He selected a song in Chinese called "Kiss Me Goodbye" reconstituted in English as "Take Me to Your Heart" by the Danish band Michael Learns to Rock. Singing in front of 500 people in your first language is hard enough, but Micah and Penny kicked it up notch by switching to each other's native tongues. You can hear the crowd of Chinese women melt when Micah signs "Wo he ni wen bie zai wo ren jie." Honestly, I'm not sure what it means, but it seemed to work for them.

Our friend Liran acted as of of the emcees for the evening--utilizing her perfect Chinese and excellent stage presence to announce the performances and run the show. She's going to make a heck of a lawyer one day.

Suffice it to say that the evening exceeded our expectations, both in terms of the amount of fun we had, but also in terms of the sheer talent of our Chinese classmates at BeiDa. Unfortunately, the Chinese students and the foreign non-Chinese speaking students at PKU law take classes in separate buildings, so the evening was a nice change from the usual separation.

Please forgive the gate-crasher who found your blog accidentally and I would like to say 'nice to meet you' to you.

Do you know the CUN, the Central University for Nationalities? It is located at Zhongguancun South Street in Beijing. I am a graduate student there, and as an exchange student I will stay here, Japan, until next March.

Wish you have a good time in PKU.

By the way, "Wo he ni wen bie zai wu ren de jie" means "I kissed you goodbye on the void street."

Good night in Beijing.
